Bernard Corrigans

Go Back

ACE Refrigeration will shortly been on site for Bernard Corrigan in Glasgow.

Bernard Corrigan Ltd are a wholesale supplier of fish, poultry and game to the hotel and restaurant business in Glasgow city centre and outlying areas.

Bernard Corrigan source fish from the Glasgow Fish Market and distribute it from their Howard St depot.

ACE will install a new 4m x 3m chill room for Corrigans during May.

The existing coldrooms were installed by ACE nearly 40 years ago and are still working and in use.

First Milk

Go Back

ACE Refrigeration is back on site for First Milk, the UK’s only major dairy company which is 100% owned by British farmers.

This time ACE engineers are replacing existing refrigeration plant with energy efficient equipment at First Milk’s Campbeltown Creamery, home to the award winning Mull of Kintyre cheddar and the iconic Scottish brand, Scottish Pride.

As well as a range of cheeses, the creamery also manufactures a range of own label retail cheddar products, and butter as part of the Scottish Pride range.

Previously ACE worked at the Glenfield Dairy in Cowdenbeath for First Milk on the Main Chill Area; replacing dated equipment which had become inefficient and was no longer working to full capacity.

ACE was tasked with providing a cost effective replacement refrigeration system while giving consideration to external noise restrictions.

The Glenfield Dairy is a major supplier to the retail & foodservice markets, through the production of Quark, cottage cheese and sour cream.

Fáilte Foods

Go Back

ACE Refrigeration is currently on site at Fáilte Foods where they are responsible for the design, supply and installation of a Freezer Room.

Previously we were responsible for a large Freezer Room and Cold Rooms at Fáilte’s Glasgow base.

The footprint of this project is 19.964m².

ACE has also installed a Temperature Monitoring System for the Freezer Room.

This allows for the effective energy management of the entire system, and also helps to increase the control and reporting capabilities for the end user in an easy to use way, giving staff increased control.

All controls are networked via an IP control system to a central temperature monitoring system.

This management system ensures that all aspects of the refrigeration are monitored on a continual basis.

The use of this controller also help clients who come to ACE Refrigeration for their refrigeration systems further reduce running costs by at least 10%; ensuring the entire system always operates at peak performance, reducing energy costs and  pinpointing any potential issues before they become a problem, as well as allowing remote access to monitor the entire system from afar.

From January 2015 revised F-Gas regulations apply.

This regulation legislates against high GWP (Global Warming Potential) HFC refrigerants, specifically those refrigerants with a GWP greater than 2500, this includes the commonly used refrigerant R404a which has a GWP of 3900.

With the life-cycle of these high GWP refrigerants now ending in 2020 we have selected a reduced GWP refrigerant for this project – we have selected R407F refrigerant which has a GWP of 1825.

DFDS Aberdeen

Go Back

ACE Refrigeration is on site installing a new Cold Room for DFDS at their facility in Aberdeen.

DFDS Logistics Scotland offers a complete range of logistics solutions and is the largest provider of transportation services to the Scottish salmon and seafood industries.

The main warehouse facility is located in Larkhall, near Glasgow. This is supported by two satellite warehouses in Aberdeen and Boulogne Sur Mer, France providing Europe-wide distribution facilities.

ACE Refrigeration is installing a new Cold Room with a footprint of 312.66m² which will cool 6,000kg of produce, entering at +10°C, and pulled down within 12 hours, using refrigerant R407f.

Changes to F-Gas Regulations came into effect on 1st January 2015.

Here at ACE Refrigeration, we can always help you stay compliant with F-Gas regulations, either as part of our service and maintenance contracts, or by installing fixed leak detection units to your refrigeration plant.

Fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gases) gases are a family of chemicals that contain fluorine.

Most F-gases are very powerful greenhouse gases which contribute to global warming if emitted into the atmosphere.

HFCs (Hydrofluorocarbons) are common F-gases found in air conditioning and refrigeration systems.

The central element of these revised regulations is part of the phase down of HFC Refrigerants with a global warming potential (GWP) greater than 2500, with a complete ban on new equipment using these refrigerants effective from 2020 onwards.

However, recycled and reclaimed HFCs with greater than 2,500 GWP will still be allowed for servicing existing plants until 2030.

The previous classification confirming leak detection quantity per year based on refrigerant charge thresholds have now been replaced by a system based instead on carbon emissions per year.

All systems with a CO2 equivalent greater than 500 tonnes must have a fixed leak detection system installed.

But for any system with fixed leak detection installed, the quantity of leak tests required is reduced by 50%.

ACE continues work with Scottish Prisons Service

Go Back

ACE Refrigeration is currently working on site at three Scottish prisons including HMP Dumfries, HMP Perth and HMP Edinburgh.

Engineers are just about to finish a project to replace R22 at HMP Dumfries. Following European legislation, the ban on recycled and/or reclaimed R22 Refrigeration gas came into effect on 31st December 2014.

We are also on site in the capital at HMP Edinburgh where we’re installing new air conditioning in the training room. And again at HMP Perth where we are installing new air conditioning in the PABX Room.

Last year, ACE Refrigeration was awarded a three year service and maintenance contract with the Scottish Prison Service.

The family firm, established in Glasgow in 1951, provides both preventative and reactive service and maintenance for both air conditioning and refrigeration.

The new contract covers 13 prisons and three other sites throughout the country and will run for three years with an option to extend the contract for a further two years.

ACE teams head North

Go Back

Two ACE Refrigeration teams have headed north for projects in Granton-on-Spey and Ross-Shire with Spey Valley Smokehouse and JD Cowper. J&D Cowper has developed over the past 20 years to become one of the premier refrigerated transport companies in the Highlands.

From their base in Ross-shire, they work with a cross-section of customers – from local producers to multinational supermarket chains, delivering a broad selection of temperature controlled freight. J&D Cowper has built up lasting relationships with organisations such as Lidl, Asda, and Tesco.

ACE Refrigeration are currently on site building a Frozen Food Room as well as installing a Blast Freezer at their Evanton site.

Meanwhile Spey Valley Smokehouse provides smoked fish to the domestic and export retail and wholesale markets.

It’s a wholly owned subsidiary of Strathaird Salmon Ltd, which in turn is part of the Findus group.

ACE Refrigeration is currently replacing inefficient and outdated equipment in the Post Smoke Chill while carrying out an R22 Retrofit in four cold rooms.

The use of virgin R22 gas is already prohibited and the use of recycled and/or reclaimed gas will be prohibited after 31st Dec 2014. Best options for its replacement depend on a number of factors including the age and condition of your equipment.

Castle MacLellan

Go Back

We are currently on site at Castle MacLellan’s pâté processing plant at Kirkcudbright with responsibility for the design and installation of two blast chills, meat chill, vegetable chill, two new dairy chills, a blast topping chill room, a new topping blast freezer, defrost room, a freezer room and a chill store as well as prep holding chill, temperature controlled holding room and an alcohol store.

The newly installed air handling units use a sock air distribution system to minimise pollution.

Meanwhile the control system for the defrost room utilises a Eurotherm Nanodac twin loop controller with a custom designed control logic program. This bespoke programme was designed by ACE as there is no proprietary defrost room controller available.

The control system utilises the advanced Eurotherm PID algorithm providing high performance and reliability to the process. Functionality includes overshoot inhibition (cutbacks); compensation for power fluctuations using power feed-forward; linear, fan, oil and water cooling.

In recent years ACE Refrigeration has become the leading refrigeration partner to many top food processing companies with expertise in the fish and seafood industry, fruit and vegetable sectors, bakeries, dairy, eggs, poultry and meat as well as food distribution, wholesale and logistics companies.

ACE teams have carried out indemnified design and installation projects for cold rooms and freezer rooms, ice generators, chilled production facilities, Hydro Coolers, water chillers, spiral freezers, blast chillers and blast freezers.

Our refrigeration plant also incorporates temperature monitoring systems, which are both HACCP accredited, BRC compliant and conform to Food Safety and Inspection Service standards.

During the last 30 years Castle MacLellan has grown from a small operation producing several tubs of pâté a day in the back of a small delicatessen, to a major national force supplying supermarkets the length and breadth of the country offering a range of meat, fish and vegetarian pâtés.

Swords Bakery

Go Back

ACE Refrigeration recently installed a new screw compressor pack for William Sword Bakery as they required R22 Replacement for their Spiral Freezer.

As well as replacing the evaporator coil, ACE Refrigeration installed a pack consisting of three compressors offering increased reliability and efficiency – screw compressor packs allow for output to meet demand when applications with varying loads are required.

R22 Replacement is required by 31st December 2014 and with new F-gas regulations being introduced, initial replacement R404A is also now looking at being phased out rapidly.  RS-50  is a low global warming and higher efficiency replacement for R22 in medium and low temperature refrigeration applications as well as R404A in both new & existing equipment.

Designed to minimise product weight loss and maximise production, spiral freezers offer the ability for continual conveyor freezing and gentle handling of products during the freezing process. The application of spiral freezers is especially good for areas with limited floor space. Spiral freezers are most commonly used in the fish and seafood industry, bakeries and by manufacturers of frozen prepared foods.

William Sword Ltd has been baking delicious produce for more than a hundred years. Best known for its sweet pastry products and popular pies, the Cumbernauld-based bakery is still owned and managed by the Sword family to this day, having grown from its origins as a small local bakery in the Lanarkshire town of Airdrie to become a modern food manufacturer.

ACE Refrigeration is an associate member of Scottish Bakers and clients in the bakery and confectionery business also include McGhees Family Bakers, Fergusons Bakery In Kilmarnock, Cobbs Bakery, Highland Chocolatier, McVities Biscuits, Fords Bakers in Edinburgh and BFP Wholesale.

First Milk

Go Back

ACE Refrigeration is currently on site at Cowdenbeath for First Milk, the UK’s only major dairy company which is 100% owned by British farmers.

The Glenfield Dairy is a major supplier to the retail & foodservice markets, through the production of Quark, cottage cheese and sour cream.

Our ACE engineers are working on the Main Chill Area, replacing dated equipment which has become inefficient and no longer working to full capacity.

ACE has been tasked with providing a cost effective replacement refrigeration system which also takes into consideration external noise restrictions.

The existing condensers were located within the roof void which was warm and reduced the capabilities of the system. Now ACE engineers have put the new compressors on a mezzanine level where there is adequate ventilation and we have installed a low noise condenser. Because the surface area of the condenser is larger, we can achieve lower noise levels without compromising on duty.

Internally there are also two mini compressor packs which have been designed with a finer level of control built in. This means output can meet demand, allowing for the ability to switch off half of the compressor when production is reduced so that the plant runs more efficiently with less power outage.
